Mtech's Mission

    The mission of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), a unit of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, is to:

    • Educate the next generation of technology entrepreneurs;
    • Create successful technology ventures; and
    • Connect Maryland companies with university resources to help them succeed.

    Mtech has built a comprehensive entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem at the University of Maryland. Its programs arm top students from around the world with the knowledge of how to successfully launch companies and guide aspiring and existing entrepreneurs through the entire lifecycle of launching and maintaining technology-based ventures.

    Mtech today announces that Carolyn Boulger Karlson, Ph.D., has joined the institute as the new director of the Hillman Entrepreneurs Program, an innovative educational initiative that fosters entrepreneurship and community leadership in transfer students who begin their study at Prince George's Community College and complete their bachelor's degrees at the University of Maryland.

    Karlson joins Mtech from College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., where she spent the past four years as the dean of graduate studies. Karlson has also taught at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

    "Dr. Karlson is a both an award-winning academic and a business-minded professional, making her an ideal addition to our team," says Dean Chang, Ph.D., director of Mtech's venture and education programs. "That unique combination means she can leverage her experience to build Hillman Entrepreneurs into a nationally recognized, model program with an advanced entrepreneurship curriculum while also contributing greatly to Mtech's other entrepreneurship and venture creation programs."

    While at College of Notre Dame, Karlson introduced a new project management curriculum to the Master's of Management program, incorporated online learning into graduate studies and expanded graduate programs to satellite locations to better serve government and military markets.

    Before coming to the college in 2005, Karlson taught at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business, where she served as associate professional specialist in business and associate professor of management at the Fanning Center for Business Communication.

    Karlson received the 2003-04 Kaneb Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching at the University of Notre Dame. She taught business and management writing, speaking, listening and entrepreneurship courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive MBA levels. She also developed and taught cross-departmental courses such as "Technology and the New Economy," "Strategic Communication for Not-for-Profit Organizations," "Writing and Presenting a Business Plan" and "Critical Thinking for Business Leadership." Karlson created and taught one of the first online courses offered through the College of Business' Master of Science in Administration program.

    Prior to joining the University of Notre Dame, Karlson served as assistant professor and coordinator of the journalism program at Grand Valley State University in Michigan from 1993-97. She has also been the Webmaster for several health-related Web sites.

    Karlson began her career as a business reporter for the Boston Business Journal in 1985 and has worked at several publications in writing and editing positions, including CFO Magazine and The Portsmouth Press in New Hampshire.

    She holds a doctorate in mass media (telecommunications, journalism and advertising) from Michigan State University's College of Communication Arts and Sciences; a master of science in journalism from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism; and a bachelor of arts in communications from Simmons College.

    The four-year Hillman Entrepreneurs Program is a scholarship program targeted to students who have an interest in entrepreneurship and an enthusiasm for starting a business or leading a company.

    The program, launched in the fall of 2006, was established through a generous $1.7 million gift from David and Suzanne Hillman and offers a new model in education. Students who might not otherwise be able to afford a college education are now starting their college career at Prince George's Community College on full scholarship, including books, and then they transfer seamlessly to UM to pursue their bachelor's degrees. At Maryland, students receive 2/3 of their tuition, books and a $1,000 merit scholarship.

    The Hillman Entrepreneurs Program offers entrepreneurship and leadership courses, intense mentoring, networking opportunities, and community building to each of the students in the program. The program is about building the ethical leaders of tomorrow's local economy. Just as David and Suzanne Hillman are giving back to the community that has brought them success, these Hillman Entrepreneurs are expected to contribute to the economic growth of the community and to help others who follow after them succeed.
