University of Maryland Start-Up Boot Camp Video

Don't miss one of the most exciting entrepreneurship events of the year, the University of Maryland Technology Start-Up Boot Camp, an intensive, one-day workshop and networking event about how to launch and grow new ventures. Speakers include Michael Chasen, co-founder and CEO of Blackboard, Inc., and Brian Hinman, co-founder and former CEO of Polycom, Inc. Presenters also come from NIH and NSF, who join venture capitalists, intellectual property experts, and successful entrepreneurs in teaching participants how to start successful ventures. Specialized tracks are availabe for beginning, bio, and high-tech entrepreneurs. Hundreds of entrepreneurial students, faculty, and professionals attend each year. Chesapeake Bay Seed Capital Fund: Financing Available for Qualifying Green Companies
If your company or technology could improve air or water quality around the Chesapeake Bay area, consider applying for investment from the Chesapeake Bay Seed Capital Fund. Supported by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and administered by Mtech, the fund will invest $250,000 annually over a three-year period into Maryland-based startup companies with innovative technologies that may help improve air and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay area. Fund recipients are jointly selected by Mtech and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. More»

October 15, 5 p.m.: A. James Clark School of Engineering Innovation Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony: Buno Pati
ECE Alumnus Buno Pati (B.S. '86, M.S. '88, Ph.D. '92, electrical engineering) will be inducted into the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame for his innovations in phase-shift lithography, which have driven the development of smaller and smaller electronic devices with ever expanding applications. Pati's work has improved the capabilities of everything from computers to cell phones to GPS devices to MP3 players. Pati is a member of the Clark School Board of Visitors and the University of Maryland Board of Trustees. He is also co-founder and CEO of Sezmi, a next-generation TV service that delivers traditional networks, movies and broadband video to viewers. Do you have a good idea for a venture but need some help from the experts to transform it into a thriving business? Pitch Dingman is a great program for UMD students who want to explore the opportunity to own and operate their own business. The first three Fridays of the month, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Dingman Center team makes its professional investment staff and Entrepreneurs in Residence available to hear and evaluate new business ideas. Students give a short (3-5 minute) “pitch” or a persuasive overview of their idea and we provide actionable feedback based upon The Dingman Process. On the last Friday of the month, students can compete for $2,500 in start-up funding at the Pitch Dingman Competition. If you’re interested, bring your “A” game and a polished pitch. Not ready to compete? Attend one of the competitions to see how other students do it.

October 27, 4 p.m.: Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Lecture & Colloquium: Dr. Patrick O'Shea, "Enlightening the Darkness"
The speaker for this event is Patrick G. O’Shea, Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering. The Department is the largest in the School of Engineering, and has been ranked by US News & World Report as having the leading graduate programs in both electrical and computer engineering among public universities in the Mid-Atlantic and North East. Prior to becoming Chair of ECE, he was Director of the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics (IREAP) at the University of Maryland. While Director of IREAP, he played a major role in establishing the Maryland Nano Center. Previously he was a Project Leader at the University of California Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was born in Cork, Ireland, and holds a B.S. degree from the National University of Ireland, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Professor O’Shea’s technical expertise lies in the field of applied electromagnetics, nonlinear dynamics and charged particle beam technology, and applications.

Theme: The Power of Stories. Humans interpret the world through stories. Designers invent stories to help understand how people will use the things they create. Stories are at the heart of entertainment. Journalists compose stories that help us understand our world. And stories are often the key element of ideas that spread: we tell each other “great stories” about people, events, places and ideas. TEDxMidAtlantic #1 will explore how stories shape and infuse our lives with meaning, and how a good story can very often be the differentiator between an idea that spreads and those that do not. Our speakers have been asked to reflect on this theme and consider the stories inherent in their work. Speakers at TEDx MidAtlantic will feature many of the leading thinkers and doers in the MidAtlantic Region.
