Tech Entrepreneur Research and Prototyping (TERP) Startup Laboratory

The TERP Startup Lab is a new technology incubation program for University of Maryland faculty, students, and regional entrepreneurs who:

  • are too early for or don’t yet meet the requirements for the VentureAccelerator or Technology Advancement Program, but
  • need a place where they can quickly develop their technology prototypes and get some help to start their companies, and
  • offer some strategic benefit or alignment with U-Md. (i.e., promotes culture of entrepreneurship, offers valuable product/service to U-Md. community, has potential to become VA/TAP company, etc.)

The TERP Startup Lab is located in Mtech's Technology Advancement Program incubator building, at 387 Technology Drive at the University of Maryland.

For over 20 years, TAP has helped entrepreneurs build some of the most successful technology companies in Maryland.

TERP Startup Lab participants can take advantage of many of the benefits TAP offers.

Benefits

  • Shared, furnished, 700-sq.-ft. space in the TAP incubator building with other TERP Startup Lab participants
  • Participants receive a mailbox, company listing, and shared conference rooms (but priority given to TAP and VA companies)
  • Participants receive access to basic hardware and software development tools, including Microsoft BizSpark, a complete suite of all Microsoft development tools and productivity software, for free
  • Participants gain the same access to TAP operations staff as TAP companies for administrative items (e.g., keycards, parking passes, etc.)
  • Benefit from entrepreneurial community and shared networking/learning among all TAP, VentureAccelerator, and TERP Startup Lab companies
  • Participants have access to TAP business advisory staff at the monthly Entrepreneur Office Hours

Criteria

  • Initial and renewal applications reviewed and approved by TAP staff using following criteria:
  • Strategic benefit or alignment with U-Md
  • Priority given to U-Md. applicants
  • First place winners of the University of Maryland $75K Plan Competition and Faculty Venture Fairs are eligible for one free year at the TERP Startup Lab
  • Special accommodations are made for Hinman CEOs and Hillman Entrepreneurs program students

Directions

 

From Baltimore Take I-95 South to the Capital Beltway (I-495):

Follow signs to College Park, US Route 1 South. Proceed approximately two miles south on US Route 1 to University's Campus Drive entrance. Turn right on Campus Drive and immediately make another right turn onto Paint Branch Drive. Go through two stop signs, and at the third intersection (has no stop sign) make a left onto Technology Drive. Make an immediate left into the gated Visitor Parking Lot. Once you park, be sure to note your parking space number and pay at one of the pay stations, or you may be ticketed. The pay stations take cash or credit cards. The TAP Building is the only building adjacent to the visitor's lot. After 4:00 PM you can park in lot CC1 just beyond the TAP Building.

From Annapolis and points east Take US Route 50 to Capital Beltway (I-95/495):

Go north on I-95/495 to College Park, US Route 1 South (exit 25). Proceed approximately two miles south on US Route 1 to the University's Campus Drive entrance. Turn right on Campus Drive and immediately make another right turn onto Paint Branch Drive. Go through two stop signs, and at the third intersection (has no stop sign) make a left onto Technology Drive. Make an immediate left into the gated Visitor Parking Lot. From within the city of Washington, DC:

Go northeast on Rhode Island Avenue (US Route 1). After entering the state of Maryland, continue on US Route 1 for approximately five miles to College Park. Turn left at traffic light on Campus Drive and immediately make a right turn onto Paint Branch Drive. Go through two stop signs, and at the third intersection (has no stop sign) make a left onto Technology Drive. Make an immediate left into the gated Visitor Parking Lot. Once you park, be sure to note your parking space number and pay at one of the pay stations, or you may be ticketed. The pay stations take cash or credit cards. From points south and west of Washington DC, and Montgomery County, Maryland:
