MIPS: OverviewLean Manufacturing

WHAT IS LEAN MANUFACTURING?

Lean Manufacturing is a team-baseds systematic approach to identifying and eliminating wasteful or non-value-adding activities within your manufacturing organization. Lean is a whole new way of thinking, and should be considered much more than a series of programs or techniques. It must become a whole system approach in order to create a new operating philosophy, which focuses on eliminating all non-value adding activities from order entry to receipt of payment.

WHY BECOME LEAN?

Lead time and WIP reduction, Quality improvement, enhanced flexibility, reduced transactions, simplified scheduling, improved communications, reduced costs, better on-time deliveries, increased sales, and improved space utilization are all possible through the effective planning and implementation of Lean Manufacturing.

A ROADMAP FOR SUCCESS

A company's Lean journey and implementation roadmap will vary based on company specifics; however, a "typical" Lean roadmap would include the following major steps:

  1. Lean Awareness Training - to develop an understanding of what Lean manufacturing is, and why Lean principles should be practiced at the company.
  2. Assessment - to determine high impact improvement areas and to prioritize subsequent activities. Also, an assessment provides a snapshot or benchmark of current conditions.
  3. Lean Implementation Training - to provide the tools and detailed understanding necessary for a team to analyze and know how to design improvements. (Cellular, Set-up Reduction, etc.) This step is usually linked to step 4, "Implementation," and delivered Just-In-Time - training followed by immediate action and application.
  4. Implementation - The team analyzes, designs, and implements improvements.
  5. Continuous Improvement

A "system" perspective must be used when creating your Lean roadmap, and the success of initial "pilot" improvement projects is critical to building understanding and commitment throughout the organization. By continuously applying the appropriate Lean techniques for your company, results will surely be obtained that will classify you as World Class.

WCP ASSESSMENT/BENCHMARKING

Dr. Richard J. Schonberger's World Class by Principles (WCP) assessment matrix and international benchmarking tool consists of "16 customer-focused, employee-driven, data-based" principles that Industry Week called "the true predictors of future success". As a WCP affiliate partner, MTES is authorized to conduct, or oversee, WCP assessments of companies to determine their competitive strengths and weaknesses, and to provide the company with a customized WCP Benchmarking report prepared by Schonberger & Associates, Inc. In addition, MTES will prepare a summary report including recommendations based on observations, available data, and company personnel interviews. One of the unique characteristics of WCP Benchmarking is its action orientation. Manufacturers need a company-wide system for planning and scoring their own drive toward the ever-rising standards of competitive excellence, and that is the purpose of the WCP Benchmarking. Please contact MTES for more information on WCP Benchmarking and Dr. Richard J.Schonberger, or to schedule an introductory meeting.
